Pevensey Castle

Pevensey Castle, East Sussex

Pevensey Castle
East Sussex

Duke William of Normandy landed at Pevensey in October 1066 with a dunking when he jumped off his ship, having just crossed the English Channel. Pevensey Castle beat him there as the Roman fort Anderida, offering suitable (for those olden times when Sussex hotels might not have been quite what they are today) temporary accommodation whilst preparing for the decisive battle with King Harold. More recently it housed World War 2 gun emplacements and it's now a great place to explore.

Today Pevensey Castle is a good mile inland from the seaside at Pevensey Bay where you will find shops and beach. In Pevensey's High Street you will find its Tudor Court Hall, once the smallest town hall in England.
