The Long Man of Wilmington

The Long Man of Wilmington

The Long Man of Wilmington
Sussex

Theories abound concerning the history of The Long Man of Wilmington. Popular local legend suggested prudish Victorians robbed the Giant of his manhood, but there is no evidence, historical or archaeological, to confirm this.

During World War II The Long Man was painted green to stop enemy aircraft using him as a landmark. The terracettes, horizontal ripples in the turf, appear to vary constantly as the soil is rolled and eroded downhill from weathering and animal activity. You'll find him six miles from Eastbourne.
